SquadGoals was an iOS app for groups of friends working on shared goals, with an AI coach sitting in the chat. I built it in early 2023, right after GPT-4 launched.
Two things were true at the same time. The first: I’d never written iOS before, and was still pretty new to building software in general. The second: GPT-4 had just appeared and looked dramatically more capable than anything before it. The project started as a test of whether the new model was good enough to help me build an app I otherwise couldn’t have. It turned out to be.
I learned a lot — about AI, about iOS, about how small groups behave inside apps. My friends and I used it and enjoyed it. The thing that ended it wasn’t the idea; I signed on to work with an AI startup and needed to put all of my focus there.
